Product Overview

Based on prototypes built during the 1960s, International extended wide-vision cabooses became a familiar sight on railroads from coast to coast. Their distinctive widened cupola gave crews improved visibility along the sides of a freight train while providing the working and living space traditionally associated with caboose operations.

As End-of-Train devices became increasingly common, cabooses gradually disappeared from regular freight service. The story didn't end there, however. In the early 2000s, cabooses and similar equipment began appearing in a new role as shoving platforms. These cars provided crews with a safer place to stand while guiding reverse movements rather than requiring a crew member to ride on the side of a freight car. Atlas captures these variations with appropriate details, including blanked-out windows on shoving-platform versions where applicable.

Why We Love This Model

A wide-vision caboose instantly gives a freight train the character of an era when the crew still had a home at the end of the train. We especially like the versatility of this Atlas model family: depending on the specific road and configuration, these cars can represent traditional caboose service or the later shoving-platform role that gave some cabooses a second life.
