Product Overview

The EMD GP30 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between July 1961 and November 1963. A total of 948 units were built for railroads in the United States and Canada. Developed to compete with GE's 2,500-horsepower U25B, the GP30 used a 16-cylinder 567D3 prime mover producing 2,250 horsepower.

EMD also incorporated several significant improvements over the GP20, including a sealed airtight long hood, a single central air intake, and improved maintenance access. Accommodating these changes required additional space behind the cab for the central air system, turbocharger, and electrical cabinet, increasing the locomotive's overall height.

Rather than simply enlarging the existing body, EMD turned to the GM Automotive Styling Center for a more modern design. The result was the GP30's unmistakable raised profile and distinctive cab-roof treatment, creating one of the most recognizable silhouettes of the early diesel era.
