Product Overview

Built beginning in 1927 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Santa Fe's 3751-class locomotives were among the earliest and most influential 4-8-4 Northerns in North America. Originally designed as coal burners, the class was converted to oil in 1936 and received larger tenders to support their expanding role in high-speed passenger service.

The 3751 class received major upgrades in 1941, including 80-inch drivers, new frames, and Timken roller bearings on all axles. These improvements gave the locomotives impressive speed and performance, with members of the class capable of reaching more than 100 MPH. Their combination of power, speed, and long service life made them some of the most memorable locomotives in Santa Fe steam history.

ATSF #3759 holds a particularly important place in that story. The locomotive became closely associated with the end of Santa Fe steam after hauling the railroad's “Farewell to Steam” excursion between Los Angeles and Barstow.
