Electro-Motive Division introduced the GP35 during the mid-1960s as a four-axle, general-purpose locomotive powered by the 16-cylinder EMD 567D3A prime mover. Rated at 2,500 horsepower, the GP35 represented an important step in the evolution of EMD's road-switcher lineup and helped bridge the gap between earlier first-generation diesels and the highly successful locomotives that followed.
More than 1,300 GP35 locomotives were produced for railroads across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Their flexible four-axle design made them suitable for manifest freight, local service, transfer assignments, and mixed locomotive consists.
