Product Overview

The ARA 70-ton 4-Bay Hopper was a familiar part of heavy freight service across North America. Primarily designed for hauling coal, nearly 12,000 of these rugged cars were built and delivered between 1926 and 1930. Their substantial capacity, durable construction, and practical design made them a common sight in coal-hauling territory for decades.

Baltimore & Ohio depended heavily on coal traffic throughout its expansive system, particularly across the Appalachian region. The railroad’s W2b hoppers were built for this demanding work, moving vast quantities of coal from mines to industrial customers, power plants, ports, and interchange connections. The familiar “13 Great States” slogan reflects the broad territory served by the B&O and gives these cars an unmistakable railroad identity.

This Broadway Limited Imports Pack B release includes six uniquely numbered Baltimore & Ohio W2b hoppers, making it easy to assemble a convincing coal consist without repeating road numbers. Pair it with the corresponding Pack A to create a longer twelve-car fleet with additional number variety.

Each model combines finely rendered rivet detail, separately applied components, prototype-appropriate brake equipment, detailed trucks, metal wheelsets, and removable coal loads. The decorated interiors allow the cars to look equally convincing running loaded toward market or returning empty to the mines.
