The ARA 70-ton 4-Bay Hopper became one of the most common coal cars on North American railroads during the first half of the twentieth century. Nearly 12,000 were constructed between 1926 and 1930, providing dependable service hauling coal and other bulk commodities. Their rugged construction and generous capacity kept them in service for decades and made them an essential part of freight operations across the continent.

The Milwaukee Road operated an extensive freight network stretching from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. While the railroad became famous for its Hiawatha passenger trains, coal remained an important source of freight traffic, supplying industries, power plants, and railroad operations throughout its system.
