Product Description
Built in La Grange, Illinois between 1945 and 1949, the 2,000-horsepower E7 was one of the most successful and recognizable passenger diesels of its era. A total of 428 cab-equipped E7A units and 82 booster E7B units rolled off the production line, powered by twin 12-cylinder 567A engines that delivered smooth, dependable performance. As the eighth model in EMD’s iconic E-unit series, the E7 quickly became the best-selling E model of its time—earning its place at the head end of America’s premier passenger trains.
With its bold, confident profile, the E7 introduced the famous “bulldog nose” styling that would define later models like the E8 and E9. More than 20 railroads rostered these striking locomotives, making them a true nationwide icon. Today, only one example remains: former Pennsylvania Railroad E7A #5901, preserved and beautifully restored at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Every model features railroad-specific details and lighting, delivering the realism and performance your customers expect. The E7 isn’t just a locomotive—it’s the unmistakable face of first-class passenger railroading.
CRIP and the E8
The Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, commonly known as the Rock Island or CRIP, was one of the most recognizable railroads in the Midwest and Great Plains. Founded in the 19th century, the railroad operated an extensive network connecting Chicago with destinations across Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, and the Southwest. The Rock Island hauled agricultural products, manufactured goods, and passenger traffic, and became well known for its bold red-and-yellow locomotive paint schemes and colorful place in American railroad history.
The EMD E8 locomotive became an important part of the Rock Island’s passenger fleet during the 1950s and 1960s. Built for streamlined passenger service, the E8 featured sleek styling and twin diesel engines that helped modernize the railroad’s passenger operations during the transition away from steam power. Rock Island E8 locomotives were commonly assigned to passenger trains such as the Rocky Mountain Rocket and Golden State, providing dependable service across the Midwest and western plains. Their streamlined appearance and classic Rock Island paint schemes made them favorites among railfans and model railroaders alike.
