Product Description

Our Heavy and Light Pacific models closely follow the original USRA designs. Railroad-specific variations are not modeled on these locomotives, ensuring they remain true to the standard USRA prototypes. Many Pacifics were paired with the same 10,000-gallon tender used behind USRA Mikados, and our models include this 10,000-gallon tender for added authenticity.

In addition to prototypically accurate USRA paint schemes, we are also offering our USRA prototype in attractive liveries inspired by similar Pacifics operated by other railroads, along with several striking fantasy schemes for added variety.

These models are also offered in our Stealth Series. Each Stealth model includes a Next18 decoder interface and a factory-installed speaker, allowing modelers to easily install their preferred aftermarket sound decoder.

CNJ and the Heavy Pacific 4-6-2

The Central Railroad of New Jersey, commonly known as the CNJ, used Heavy Pacific 4-6-2 locomotives for many of its premier passenger trains during the height of the steam era. These larger Pacifics provided the added power needed to haul longer and heavier passenger consists while maintaining the fast schedules expected on northeastern railroads. The locomotives became closely associated with CNJ’s high-profile passenger operations between New Jersey and the Jersey Shore.

The most famous service powered by these locomotives was the legendary Blue Comet, introduced in 1929 as CNJ’s luxury passenger train between Jersey City and Atlantic City. To match the elegance of the train, the locomotives and passenger cars received the stunning Blue Comet paint scheme featuring deep blue colors accented with cream striping and polished details. The striking appearance quickly made the train one of the most recognizable passenger services in the eastern United States.

Although the Blue Comet operated for only a few years before the Great Depression reduced passenger traffic, its beautiful color scheme and powerful Pacific locomotives became lasting symbols of the golden age of steam passenger railroading.
