Product Description

Our Heavy and Light Pacific models closely follow the original USRA designs. Railroad-specific variations are not modeled on these locomotives, ensuring they remain true to the standard USRA prototypes. Many Pacifics were paired with the same 10,000-gallon tender used behind USRA Mikados, and our models include this 10,000-gallon tender for added authenticity.

In addition to prototypically accurate USRA paint schemes, we are also offering our USRA prototype in attractive liveries inspired by similar Pacifics operated by other railroads, along with several striking fantasy schemes for added variety.

These models are also offered in our Stealth Series. Each Stealth model includes a Next18 decoder interface and a factory-installed speaker, allowing modelers to easily install their preferred aftermarket sound decoder.

Great Northern and the Heavy Pacific 4-6-2

Great Northern Railway used 4-6-2 “Pacific” locomotives extensively for passenger service across its vast northern routes stretching from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. Heavy Pacific locomotives provided the additional power needed for longer passenger trains and challenging mountain territory while still maintaining the speed and smooth operation expected from premier passenger service. These locomotives regularly hauled important Great Northern trains through the Rocky Mountains and across the northern plains during the steam era.

Great Northern became especially famous for its passenger trains serving the Pacific Northwest and Glacier National Park. To promote these services, the railroad introduced its beautiful “Glacier Green” paint scheme for streamlined passenger equipment. Featuring rich green colors accented with orange and gold striping, the scheme was inspired by the natural scenery of the American Northwest and the forests surrounding Glacier National Park.

The Glacier Green colors became one of the most recognizable passenger liveries in North America and were closely associated with famous trains such as the Empire Builder. Combined with the power and elegance of Great Northern’s passenger steam locomotives, the scheme helped create a lasting image of luxury western rail travel during the golden age of streamliners.
