Product Overview

Broadway Limited Imports brings the legendary Union Pacific Big Boy back to N scale with a production designed to represent both historic steam-era locomotives and the unforgettable modern excursions of Big Boy No. 4014.

Twenty-five Big Boys were constructed in two groups, with locomotives No. 4000 through 4019 comprising Class 1 and No. 4020 through 4024 comprising Class 2. The first locomotive, No. 4000, was delivered to Omaha, Nebraska, on September 5, 1941. These enormous articulated locomotives were so substantial that Union Pacific upgraded portions of its infrastructure, including track, clearances, service facilities, and turntables, to accommodate them.

The Big Boys went on to prove themselves as remarkably capable locomotives, combining tremendous pulling power with impressive speed. Individual members of the fleet accumulated approximately one million miles during their operating careers, helping establish the class as one of the most celebrated steam locomotive designs in railroad history.

This production includes models representing several different eras and appearances, from original 1940s coal-burning Big Boys to the restored No. 4014 in modern excursion service. Broadway Limited has incorporated numerous prototype-specific details to capture these variations, making each version an impressive centerpiece for an N scale Union Pacific collection.

Modern Excursions & Historic Big Boys

For modern-era modelers, this production celebrates the remarkable return of Big Boy No. 4014 to steam. Several versions recreate distinctive appearances from recent excursion service, including models inspired by the America's 250th Anniversary Tour and the locomotive's memorable 2025 excursion between Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Denver, Colorado.

New details developed for these modern versions include the commemorative front grab iron placard, golden eagle mounted above the headlight, aluminum tires and walkway stripes, a newly tooled dual-beam headlight, new pilot and coupler cover, and the special Union Pacific shield with red, white, and blue striping carried during the East Coast Tour.

Historic versions are also represented, including locomotives in their 1941 as-delivered appearance with aftercoolers and 25-C-100 coal tenders, along with later 1944 configurations featuring Wilson aftercoolers and larger 25-C-400 coal tenders. This range gives modelers the opportunity to represent the Big Boy both during its original freight-service career and in today's celebrated heritage operations.
