BN History

Burlington Northern (BN) was one of the most influential railroads in the western United States, formed in 1970 through the merger of Great Northern, Northern Pacific, CB&Q, and SP&S. Known for its iconic Cascade Green paint scheme, BN became a dominant force in hauling bulk commodities across the Great Plains and into the Pacific Northwest.

Coal was a massive part of BN’s business, especially with the rise of Powder River Basin coal in Wyoming. BN played a key role in moving this low-sulfur coal to power plants across the country, often in long, dedicated unit trains. Gondolas like the AeroFlo were part of the evolution toward higher-capacity, more efficient freight cars designed to keep up with growing demand.

For modelers, BN coal service offers the perfect mix of long trains, distributed power, and heavy-haul

Big Value, Serious Performance

These AeroFlo gondolas punch above their weight when it comes to value. You’re getting:

  • Premium metal wheelsets (a big upgrade over plastic)
  • Reliable metal couplers right out of the box
  • High-end paint and printing typically found on more expensive models

That means less upgrading, less frustration, and more time actually running trains.

Whether you're building a CN unit coal train or just adding variety to your freight roster, this is an easy, high-impact addition that delivers both performance and realism without breaking the bank.
