Introduced in 1981, the Amfleet II arrived during the EMD F40PH's life cycle in Amtrak service. Sometimes affectionately called the “Amtube” by enthusiasts because of its distinctive rounded form, the Amfleet II featured larger windows and more comfortable seating conditions than its predecessor. Designed for longer-distance travel than the Amfleet I, the cars retained the versatility of a single-level design compared with Amtrak's taller, double-decker Superliner equipment. This Kato two-car set provides a pair of individually numbered Amfleet II coaches in the recognizable Amtrak Phase III scheme, complete with interior lighting that brings the passenger cars to life in operation.
