Product Overview

During its early years, Amtrak operated passenger equipment inherited from the railroads that had previously provided intercity passenger service. Much of that equipment was aging, steam heated, and in need of replacement. In 1973, Amtrak began addressing that need with the purchase of new Amfleet passenger cars from Budd. The initial order produced 492 Amfleet I cars, distinguished by doors and vestibules at both ends and produced primarily in coach and dinette configurations. Despite the later arrival of the Amfleet II, Amfleet I cars have remained an important part of the Amtrak fleet, particularly on shorter-distance routes. This Kato set recreates four of these distinctive cars in Amtrak's classic Phase III appearance.
