Product Overview

During its early years, Amtrak relied heavily on passenger cars inherited from the private railroads whose intercity passenger operations it had taken over. Much of that equipment was aging, steam heated, and in need of modernization. Amtrak began addressing the problem in 1973 with its order for the first Amfleet cars from Budd.

The initial order produced 492 Amfleet I cars. Easily identified by the doors and vestibules located at both ends of the car, the Amfleet I fleet included several configurations centered primarily around coach and food-service use. Their stainless-steel construction and distinctive rounded profile became synonymous with Amtrak passenger service, and Amfleet I cars continue to serve primarily on shorter-distance routes decades after their introduction.

This limited-edition Kato set tells that long story in an especially creative way. Each of the seven coaches represents a different generation of Amtrak's visual identity, beginning with Phase I and progressing through Phase VII. Displayed together, the cars provide a striking look at how Amtrak's branding has evolved while the underlying Amfleet I design has remained a remarkably enduring part of America's passenger railroad.
