Product Overview
Amtrak's Amfleet story began in the 1970s as the railroad sought modern replacements for the aging passenger equipment it had inherited from its predecessor railroads. Built by Budd, the stainless-steel Amfleet family would go on to become one of the most recognizable sights in American passenger railroading.
Introduced in 1981, the Amfleet II was developed with longer-distance passenger service in mind. Compared with the earlier Amfleet I, Amfleet II cars featured larger passenger windows, a single vestibule, and accommodations suited to longer journeys while retaining the distinctive rounded stainless-steel appearance of the Amfleet family.
This Kato set represents Amfleet II equipment in Amtrak's contemporary Phase VII appearance. The newest Amtrak livery uses a dual-blue treatment accompanied by service-specific accent colors.
