Product Overview

These 50' boxcars were built for Northern Pacific in the early 1950s and received the special red, white, and blue “Share in Freedom; US Savings Bonds” paint scheme in 1968. Created during an era when railroads frequently carried public-service and patriotic messages, the colorful design turned everyday freight equipment into a moving reminder of national participation and support.

Burlington Northern was formed in 1970 through the merger of Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago Burlington & Quincy, and Spokane Portland & Seattle. Former Northern Pacific freight cars continued operating under their new owner, often retaining earlier paint schemes and markings as they accumulated years of road grime, fading, and general wear.

Burlington Northern later merged with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway in 1995 to form BNSF. These models capture an interesting transitional chapter when older Northern Pacific equipment remained in service beneath the Burlington Northern identity.

With two different road numbers included, this set makes it easy to add variety to a period freight train while preserving the visual connection between the matching cars. The patriotic decoration and realistic weathering create a memorable pair that stands out without appearing freshly painted or display-only.

Atlas and Micro-Trains Grit & Grime Series

The Grit & Grime Series gives freight equipment the lived-in appearance of cars that have spent years working on the railroad. Instead of the clean, uniform finish of a newly delivered model, these boxcars feature factory-applied weathering that suggests faded paint, accumulated dirt, streaking, and the everyday effects of regular service.

The weathering is especially effective on the bold “Share in Freedom” scheme. It softens the bright red, white, and blue decoration and helps the cars blend naturally into a working freight consist while still preserving the distinctive character that makes the prototype so collectible.

Why We Love This 2-Pack

The “Share in Freedom” scheme already makes these boxcars historically interesting, but the Grit & Grime treatment gives them an added level of realism. The weathering helps tell the story of former Northern Pacific cars that remained in service through the Burlington Northern era rather than looking like freshly painted commemorative pieces.

We also appreciate that the set includes two individually numbered cars. They can operate together as a distinctive pair, be separated within a longer freight train, or serve as the foundation for a larger collection of weathered transitional-era rolling stock.
