Product Overview
Rail transportation plays an important role in supporting the United States military, particularly when moving heavy vehicles, tracked equipment, and other large shipments over long distances. Specialized freight cars used in military service can be identified by their distinctive Department of Defense markings, reporting marks, equipment numbers, and operating stencils.
Microscale's HO Scale Department of Defense (DODX) Freight Car decal set provides an assortment of military lettering and identification markings for custom freight car projects. The sheet includes DODX reporting marks, numerical lettering, United States Army and Air Force identification, military insignia, and smaller equipment stencils. These details are particularly useful for modelers recreating specialized military rail equipment and freight movements associated with defense installations.
Military Rail Transportation & STRACNET
The Railroads for National Defense (RND) Program helps ensure that the nation's railroad network can support defense deployment and peacetime transportation requirements. The program coordinates military rail transportation needs with the civilian railroad system, helping identify and maintain routes important to national defense.
Working with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the program established the Strategic Rail Corridor Network (STRACNET), an interconnected system of railroad routes supporting military installations and important transportation facilities.
According to Microscale's product description, STRACNET encompasses more than 36,000 miles of track serving more than 130 defense installations. This extensive network illustrates the continuing importance of freight railroads in moving military equipment throughout the United States.

Create Realistic Military Rail Movements
Military freight movements offer model railroaders an opportunity to introduce unusual equipment and interesting operating scenarios. Heavy-duty flatcars, specialized transport cars, and other defense-related railroad equipment can create distinctive trains that stand apart from ordinary commercial freight traffic.
Use these decals to letter suitable military freight car models, restore missing markings, or create custom equipment for a military installation or defense transportation scene. The assortment of DODX reporting marks, identification numbers, and service-specific graphics provides flexibility for different projects. Consult prototype photographs and the manufacturer's instruction sheet to determine appropriate lettering arrangements.
