This pre-owned Broadway Limited Imports EMD SD40-2 comes from the store owner's personal collection and remains in excellent condition with low run time. Introduced by Electro-Motive Division in January 1972, the SD40-2 became one of the most successful and enduring diesel locomotives ever produced. Nearly 4,000 units were built between 1972 and 1989, and their combination of 3,000 horsepower, mechanical reliability, and straightforward maintenance made the SD40-2 an industry standard for decades.
The SD40-2 shared its extended frame and HT-C trucks with other Dash 2-series models. Its long front and rear platforms, often called porches, became a recognizable spotting feature, while three radiator fans and a single large exhaust stack helped distinguish it from similar locomotives. These versatile units handled manifest freight, coal trains, intermodal service, locals, and work assignments throughout North America.
CSX inherited a large and diverse SD40-2 fleet through its predecessor railroads and continued using these reliable locomotives across the system.
