This pre-owned Broadway Limited Imports EMD SD40-2 comes from the store owner's personal collection and remains in excellent condition with low run time. Introduced by Electro-Motive Division in January 1972, the SD40-2 became one of the most successful diesel locomotives ever produced. Nearly 4,000 units were built between 1972 and 1989, and their combination of 3,000 horsepower, dependable performance, and straightforward maintenance helped make the SD40-2 an industry standard for several decades.
The SD40-2 shared its extended frame and HT-C trucks with other Dash 2-series locomotives. Its longer frame created the distinctive front and rear platforms commonly called porches, while three roof-mounted radiator fans and a single large exhaust stack helped distinguish it from similar EMD models. These versatile locomotives handled coal trains, manifest freights, intermodal service, locals, and work assignments across North America.
