Product Description

As the demand grew in the 70s for larger capacity boxcars, along with the need to replace aging 40’ cars, this series of 50’ double door boxes was produced by PC&F for the Southern Pacific and its subsidiary St. Louis Southwestern (SSW). Constructed between 1972 and 1975, these boxcars are 50’-7” in length with a capacity of either 5258 cu ft for standard cars, or 5119 cu ft for those equipped for DF (Damage Free) Loading. All B-70 boxcars feature Hydra-Cushion underframes and were delivered with either Youngstown or Superior doors.

In 1972, Pacific Car and Foundry (PC&F) built the first of what was to be the B-70-69/71/75 Series of boxcars for the Southern Pacific and its subsidiary St. Louis Southwestern (Cotton Belt). As these boxcars entered the 2020s, they began to disappear very quickly due to age and wear. Some still wear their original SP and SSW paint, while the the Golden West Service cars have been stenciled back to SP or for new owners. This has created some wild patch-out schemes.

The B-70-69-71/75 Boxcar now has a modern spin, thanks to the selection of patch-out schemes, Lake State Railway and that mysterious Railroad of Lies car that somehow slipped into the product listings.

Lake State Railway

Founded in 1992, Lake State Railway (LSRC) is a respected regional railroad serving Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and continuing the rich railroading tradition of the Great Lakes region. Operating from its headquarters in Saginaw, Michigan, LSRC was created from portions of the former Detroit and Mackinac Railway and has grown into an important transportation link for agricultural, industrial, and manufacturing customers across the state. Through connections with major Class I railroads including CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Canadian National, Lake State Railway helps move Michigan products throughout North America.

Lake State Railway has become especially popular with railfans thanks to its striking blue locomotives and rolling stock, which stand out across the scenic rural landscapes of Michigan. The railroad handles a diverse range of freight including grain, lumber, plastics, chemicals, and automotive-related traffic, while preserving dependable rail service for many communities and industries. As part of the Watco family of railroads, LSRC combines modern regional freight operations with the character and charm of classic Midwestern short line railroading.
