Product Description

Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, widevision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.

This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!

Canadian Pacific and the Wide Vision Caboose

Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was founded in 1881 to complete Canada’s first transcontinental railway, linking Eastern Canada with British Columbia and helping unite the young nation. The railroad quickly became one of North America’s most important transportation systems, hauling grain, lumber, minerals, manufactured goods, and passengers across thousands of miles of track. Known for its iconic red locomotives and scenic routes through the Canadian Rockies, CPR played a major role in the economic development of Canada and expanded into the United States through acquisitions and partnerships. Today, Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) operates as the first single-line railroad connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

Canadian Pacific made extensive use of Wide Vision Cabooses beginning in the 1960s as railroads sought safer and more efficient ways for train crews to monitor long freight trains. Unlike earlier cabooses, Wide Vision designs featured enlarged side bay windows that extended outward from the carbody, giving crews improved visibility around taller and wider freight equipment. CPR’s fleet of Wide Vision Cabooses became a familiar sight on freight trains across Canada, often painted in the railroad’s bright red “Script” or “Multimark” paint schemes. These cabooses served reliably for decades before advances in technology and the adoption of End-of-Train devices gradually eliminated caboose use on most freight operations by the late 20th century.
