Product Description
Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, widevision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.
This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!
BC Rail and the Wide Vision Caboose
British Columbia Railway, better known as BC Rail, was established in 1912 as the Pacific Great Eastern Railway and grew into one of Canada’s most important regional railroads. Serving the rugged terrain of British Columbia, the railroad was vital in transporting lumber, minerals, pulp, paper, and other natural resources from remote communities to major ports and industries. Renamed BC Rail in 1972, the railroad became well known for its distinctive blue, white, and red paint scheme and powerful locomotive fleet operating through mountainous territory. In 2004, BC Rail’s operations were leased to Canadian National, though its legacy remains highly respected among railfans and historians.
BC Rail operated Wide Vision Cabooses extensively throughout the latter half of the 20th century as part of its freight operations across British Columbia. The railroad favored the design because the extended bay windows gave crews improved visibility around taller freight cars commonly used in lumber and resource service. BC Rail’s cabooses often worked long trains through remote mountain routes, where crew communication and train observation were especially important. Painted in the railroad’s striking blue and white colors, these Wide Vision Cabooses became iconic symbols of western Canadian railroading before cabooses were gradually retired with the adoption of modern End-of-Train devices in the 1980s and 1990s.
