Product Description

Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, wide vision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.

This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!

Frisco and the Wide Vision Caboose

The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, better known as the Frisco, was a major Midwestern and Southern railroad that operated from the late 1800s until its merger into Burlington Northern in 1980. Despite its name, the railroad never actually reached San Francisco, instead serving states such as Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, and Kansas. Frisco became well known for hauling agricultural products, coal, petroleum, and manufactured goods while also operating respected passenger services across its network. The railroad earned a loyal following among railfans thanks to its distinctive black-and-yellow locomotives and strong regional identity throughout the central United States.

Frisco operated Wide Vision Cabooses during the later years of caboose service as freight trains became longer and rail equipment grew taller. The Wide Vision design featured enlarged side bay windows that extended outward from the caboose body, allowing crews better visibility alongside modern freight cars. Frisco cabooses were commonly assigned to freight trains carrying agricultural products, general merchandise, and industrial traffic across the railroad’s network. Painted in the railroad’s recognizable orange and white schemes, Frisco Wide Vision Cabooses became memorable symbols of the railroad before cabooses were gradually replaced by End-of-Train devices in the 1980s.
