Product Description
Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, wide vision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.
This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!
Grand Trunk and the Wide Vision Caboose
Grand Trunk Western Railroad (GTW) was the American subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway and served as an important transportation link between the Midwest United States and Canada. Operating primarily in Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana, the railroad handled a wide variety of freight including automobiles, agricultural products, manufactured goods, and industrial traffic. Grand Trunk Western became especially well known for its steam locomotive fleet, including its famous 4-8-4 “Northern” locomotives, as well as its later diesel operations in bright blue, black, and red paint schemes. As part of Canadian National, GTW played a major role in cross-border rail commerce throughout the 20th century.
Grand Trunk Western operated Wide Vision Cabooses during the later decades of caboose service as railroads adopted improved crew visibility designs for modern freight operations. The Wide Vision caboose featured enlarged side bay windows that projected outward from the carbody, giving crews better sightlines along taller freight cars and longer trains. GTW cabooses were commonly seen on freight trains moving automotive traffic, manufactured goods, and mixed freight throughout the Midwest. Painted in Grand Trunk Western and Canadian National-inspired color schemes, these cabooses became familiar sights before End-of-Train devices gradually replaced traditional caboose operations during the 1980s and 1990s.
