Product Description
Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, wide vision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.
This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!
Norfolk Southern and the Wide Vision Caboose
Norfolk Southern Railway was formed in 1982 through the merger of the Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway systems, creating one of the largest and most successful freight railroads in the eastern United States. Operating across much of the East Coast and Midwest, Norfolk Southern became a major transporter of coal, intermodal traffic, automobiles, chemicals, and manufactured goods. The railroad is known for its modern black-and-white locomotive fleet and its strong focus on efficient freight operations. Through acquisitions and continued expansion, Norfolk Southern has remained one of North America’s most important Class I railroads.
Norfolk Southern operated Wide Vision Cabooses during the early years of the railroad as it inherited caboose fleets from predecessor railroads including Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway. The Wide Vision design featured enlarged side bay windows that extended outward from the caboose body, giving crews improved visibility alongside longer and taller freight trains. Norfolk Southern cabooses were commonly assigned to coal trains, manifest freights, and local service throughout the railroad’s extensive network. Painted in a variety of predecessor and Norfolk Southern schemes, these cabooses remained in service until End-of-Train devices gradually replaced traditional caboose operations across the industry during the 1980s and 1990s.
