Product Description

Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, wide vision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.

This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!

Rio Grande and the Wide Vision Caboose

The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, commonly known as the Rio Grande, was one of the most famous mountain railroads in North America. Founded in 1870, the railroad became known for its challenging routes through the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Utah, hauling coal, minerals, agricultural products, and passenger traffic across rugged terrain. The Rio Grande earned a legendary reputation for its scenic operations, including the world-famous California Zephyr passenger train, and for its powerful locomotives designed to conquer steep grades and sharp curves. Known for its striking black and orange paint schemes, the railroad later became part of the Southern Pacific system before eventually joining today’s Union Pacific Railroad.

Rio Grande operated Wide Vision Cabooses during the later years of caboose service as freight operations modernized across the railroad industry. The Wide Vision design featured enlarged side bay windows that extended outward from the caboose body, allowing crews improved visibility along long freight trains and taller railcars. Rio Grande cabooses were commonly seen bringing up the rear of coal trains, manifest freights, and merchandise traffic moving through the mountains of Colorado and Utah. Painted in the railroad’s recognizable orange and black colors, Rio Grande Wide Vision Cabooses became iconic pieces of western railroading before End-of-Train devices gradually replaced cabooses during the 1980s.
