Product Description
Between 1972 and 1981, Canadian Pacific’s Angus Shops in Montreal built over 300 modern, wide vision cabooses or “vans” and thus gained the nickname “Angus Van.” They proved popular with crews and many are still on the road today, as shoving platforms or rider cars in MOW service.
This caboose is similar to many other wide vision cabooses that are commonly seen throughout North America. Ours will feature 27 popular schemes including multiple maintenance-of-way variations, a Desert Storm tribute and even a Bicentennial scheme!
Rock Island and the Wide Vision Caboose
The Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, better known as the Rock Island Line, was founded in the 1850s and became one of the most recognizable railroads in the American Midwest and Southwest. Serving states such as Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado, the railroad hauled agricultural products, coal, petroleum, and general freight while also operating respected passenger services. The Rock Island became famous in American culture through songs, folklore, and its bold red-and-yellow locomotive paint schemes. Despite its popularity, financial struggles and industry changes eventually led to the railroad’s shutdown in 1980, making it one of the most remembered fallen flag railroads in North America.
Rock Island operated Wide Vision Cabooses during the final decades of caboose service as railroads modernized freight train operations. The Wide Vision design featured enlarged side bay windows that projected outward from the caboose body, giving crews improved visibility along longer and taller freight trains. Rock Island cabooses were commonly assigned to agricultural, industrial, and general merchandise freights operating throughout the Midwest and Great Plains. Painted in the railroad’s distinctive bright red schemes, Rock Island Wide Vision Cabooses became iconic symbols of the railroad before cabooses were gradually replaced by End-of-Train devices during the 1980s.
