Santa Fe's red, yellow, and black "Kodachrome" locomotives are lasting reminders of one of railroading's most famous mergers that never happened. During the proposed combination of the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads in the 1980s, locomotives from both companies began appearing in a common paint scheme intended for the planned Southern Pacific Santa Fe Railway.

The merger ultimately failed to receive regulatory approval, but the colorful locomotives were already on the rails.
