Product Overview

Beginning in 1970, Canadian Pacific launched an extensive rebuild program for its aging GP9 road switchers. The locomotives received chopped short hoods along with numerous other appearance changes, while later rebuilds were fitted with upgraded 645-series power assemblies. The rebuild program continued through 1988 and produced the distinctive GP9u configuration that would remain in service for decades.

Rapido's HO scale GP9u captures the character of these long-lived rebuilt locomotives with a heavy diecast frame, detailed trucks, metal handrails, working lighting, and prototype-appropriate exterior details. This Cando CCGX #4423 version brings the GP9u into a later private-operator setting and comes factory-equipped with ESU LokSound for a complete DC/DCC/Sound operating experience.

Product Features

Heavy diecast frame with super detailed piping and traction cables
Detailed Blomberg trucks (Later series have rotating bearing caps)
Traction motor details on gearboxWorking track lights, class lights, control stand lights

Working ditch lights on prototypically appropriate road numbers

Why We Love This Model

The GP9u is a great example of how a successful locomotive design could be rebuilt, modernized, and kept working for decades beyond its original service life. This Cando version is especially interesting because it moves the familiar CP rebuild into a later private-operator setting while retaining the distinctive chop-nose profile and rugged road-switcher character. Rapido's heavy construction, fine details, lighting, and ESU LokSound make it equally appealing as an operating locomotive or a standout roster addition.
