DCC/Sound • Arkansas Valley • Home Shops Exclusive

Add a distinctive MLW road-switcher to your HO scale roster with Rapido’s highly detailed RS-23 in Arkansas Valley paint, equipped with factory DCC/Sound.

Product Overview

Rapido’s HO scale MLW RS-23 brings a compact, character-filled Canadian road-switcher to life with the detail, sound, and operating quality modelers expect from Rapido. This Arkansas Valley #413 Home Shops Exclusive version is offered here as a factory DCC/Sound model, making it ready for realistic operation right out of the box. With a heavy die-cast frame, road-specific details, photo-etched grilles, a full cab interior, metal grab irons, Rapido’s dead-straight handrails, and the MoPower capacitor system for smooth DCC performance, this RS-23 is built to look sharp, run reliably, and stand out on the layout.

MLW RS-23 Locomotive

The Montreal Locomotive Works RS-23 was closely related to the S-13, sharing the same MLW-style switcher body and underframe design used on earlier S-11 and S-12 locomotives. Under the hood, the RS-23 used an ALCO 251c prime mover rated at 1,000 horsepower, giving it the compact muscle needed for industrial service, branchline work, switching assignments, and light road duty.

The key distinction between the S-13 and RS-23 was the truck arrangement: while the S-13 used switching-style AAR trucks, the RS-23 rode on road trucks, giving it a more road-switcher-oriented appearance and operating role. Rapido’s HO scale version captures that unique MLW character with a combination of road-specific detailing, crisp body tooling, premium lighting and sound features, and a model presence that feels right at home on both industrial and shortline-inspired layouts.

Why We Love This Model

The RS-23 is the kind of locomotive that brings a lot of personality in a compact package. It has the rugged MLW look, the practical proportions of a hard-working road-switcher, and just enough uniqueness to stand apart from more common diesel releases. What makes this release even more exciting is that it is part of a Home Shops collaboration, adding an extra layer of exclusivity and enthusiast appeal to an already distinctive locomotive. Home Shops has become well known within the hobby for creating unique, thoughtfully selected projects that celebrate uncommon and memorable prototypes, and that spirit fits this Arkansas Valley RS-23 perfectly. Combined with Rapido’s premium tooling, DCC/Sound operation, MoPower capacitor system, metal handrails, and full cab interior, this model feels like a truly special release for collectors and operators alike.
