CPKC

The creation of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) marked a historic milestone in North American railroading as the first single-line railroad connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Officially formed in 2023 through the merger of Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS), CPKC created a seamless freight network stretching from the Canadian Prairies to the Gulf Coast and deep into Mexico.

CPKC traces its roots back to the legendary Canadian Pacific Railway, founded in 1881 to help unite Canada from coast to coast. The railroad played a major role in settling western Canada and remains one of the country’s most iconic transportation companies. Kansas City Southern, founded in 1887, became famous for its north-south freight corridors linking the American Midwest with Gulf Coast ports and Mexican rail connections.

Modern CPKC locomotives often feature a striking blend of heritage and contemporary branding, symbolizing the railroad’s unique international reach. Today, CPKC handles a massive variety of freight traffic including intermodal containers, grain, potash, automotive traffic, energy products, and merchandise freight moving across all three North American nations.

One of the most exciting aspects of CPKC for modern railfans and modelers is the wide geographic diversity of its operations. Trains powered by CPKC locomotives can be seen crossing the Canadian Rockies, rolling through the American Midwest, and operating on routes that reach all the way to Mexico’s major industrial centers and ports.

For HO scale modelers, CPKC power offers a perfect blend of modern operations, historic railroad heritage, and continent-spanning freight service that fits naturally on contemporary layouts across North America.
