BNSF and the SD75I

Following the 1995 merger of Burlington Northern and Santa Fe, BNSF sought modern, high-horsepower locomotives to handle growing intermodal and freight traffic across its expanding western network. One of the railroad’s key choices was the EMD SD75I.

Built between 1996 and 1998, BNSF’s SD75Is were powered by EMD’s 4,300-horsepower 16-cylinder 710 engine and featured EMD’s innovative “Isolated Cab” design, which reduced vibration and improved crew comfort on long-distance runs.

BNSF commonly assigned SD75Is to fast intermodal trains, manifest freight, and transcontinental service across states such as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Their flared radiators, wide safety cabs, and distinctive EMD sound quickly made them favorites among both railroad crews and railfans.

Today, the SD75I remains an iconic locomotive of late-1990s and early-2000s BNSF railroading and continues to be a popular subject for model railroaders recreating modern western freight operations.

PLEASE NOTE: When operating Walthers-branded DCC-equipped locomotives in DC mode, do not use power packs that exceed an 18V rating. This includes MRC 1300-series power packs which have known issues with our decoders.
