Product Description

WalthersMainline takes the hard work out of modeling one of the most popular prototype diesels ever, with the EMD GP9 Phase II (sometimes referred to as the Phase 2) with Chopped Short Hood in HO Scale! Typical of railroad rebuilds from the 1960s on that are still going strong today, they're nicely detailed, and equipped with the proven power of a WalthersProto(R) drive. Perfect for railroads big or small.

Burlington Northern and the GP9

Burlington Northern inherited a large fleet of EMD GP9 locomotives through the 1970 merger of the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago Burlington & Quincy, and Spokane, Portland & Seattle railroads. Originally built during the 1950s, the versatile 1,750-horsepower GP9 became a dependable workhorse across BN’s expanding system, handling everything from branchline freight service to yard switching and local operations. Their reliability and low operating costs allowed many to remain in service well into the modern diesel era.

As crews demanded better visibility and improved safety for switching and local freight operations, Burlington Northern rebuilt a number of GP9s with “chopped nose” short hoods. These rebuilds lowered the high short hood profile, greatly improving forward visibility for engineers while extending the useful life of the locomotives. The rebuilt GP9s became a familiar sight across BN territory, especially on secondary lines and industrial assignments where their rugged performance and practical upgrades made them ideal for continued service.
