Product Description

WalthersMainline takes the hard work out of modeling one of the most popular prototype diesels ever, with the EMD GP9 Phase II (sometimes referred to as the Phase 2) with Chopped Short Hood in HO Scale! Typical of railroad rebuilds from the 1960s on that are still going strong today, they're nicely detailed, and equipped with the proven power of a WalthersProto(R) drive. Perfect for railroads big or small.

Iowa Interstate and the GP9

Iowa Interstate Railroad was formed in 1984 after acquiring former Rock Island routes across Illinois and Iowa, preserving important Midwest rail service that might otherwise have disappeared following the Rock Island’s collapse. Operating key east-west freight corridors between Chicago, the Quad Cities, and Omaha connections, the railroad became known for its dependable regional freight operations and strong ties to agricultural and industrial customers. Iowa Interstate also gained recognition among railfans for maintaining classic locomotives and operating occasional steam excursions, giving the railroad a unique blend of modern freight service and historic preservation.

The EMD GP9 locomotive became a valuable part of Iowa Interstate’s early locomotive fleet, helping the young railroad operate economically while rebuilding former Rock Island infrastructure. These rugged 1,750-horsepower locomotives handled local freight service, switching duties, and branchline assignments throughout the system. Several units were rebuilt or modified over time, including chopped nose configurations for improved crew visibility, allowing the dependable GP9s to continue serving well into the modern shortline and regional railroad era.
