Product Description
WalthersMainline takes the hard work out of modeling one of the most popular prototype diesels ever, with the EMD GP9 Phase II (sometimes referred to as the Phase 2) with Chopped Short Hood in HO Scale! Typical of railroad rebuilds from the 1960s on that are still going strong today, they're nicely detailed, and equipped with the proven power of a WalthersProto(R) drive. Perfect for railroads big or small.
Western Maryland and the GP9
Western Maryland Railway built a strong reputation as a hardworking Appalachian coal and freight carrier, operating across Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania with routes that served coal mines, heavy industry, and important eastern connections. Known for its distinctive black locomotives with bold speed lettering and later the striking “Circus” paint scheme, the railroad became respected for dependable mountain railroading and efficient freight operations. In 1973, the Western Maryland officially became part of the Chessie System alongside the Baltimore & Ohio and Chesapeake & Ohio, helping create one of the most recognizable railroad identities of the 1970s and 1980s.
The EMD GP9 locomotive played an important role on both the Western Maryland and later the Chessie System. These reliable 1,750-horsepower road switchers handled local freight service, yard duties, branchline assignments, and secondary mainline work throughout the region. Many Western Maryland GP9s continued operating after the Chessie System merger, often repainted into the famous bright yellow, blue, and vermillion Chessie colors. Some units were rebuilt with chopped short hoods to improve crew visibility, creating the rugged “chopped nose” appearance that became a familiar sight in freight yards and on local trains across former WM territory.
