Product Description

WalthersMainline takes the hard work out of modeling one of the most popular prototype diesels ever, with the EMD GP9 Phase II (sometimes referred to as the Phase 2) with Chopped Short Hood in HO Scale! Typical of railroad rebuilds from the 1960s on that are still going strong today, they're nicely detailed, and equipped with the proven power of a WalthersProto(R) drive. Perfect for railroads big or small.

Illinois Central Gulf and the GP9

Illinois Central Gulf was formed in 1972 following the merger of the Illinois Central Railroad and Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, creating a major north-south freight railroad stretching from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast. The railroad modernized operations while serving important agricultural, industrial, and chemical markets throughout the Midwest and South. Known for its striking orange-and-white “split rail” paint scheme, Illinois Central Gulf became one of the most recognizable railroads of the 1970s and 1980s before later returning to the simpler Illinois Central identity.

The EMD GP9 locomotive was an important part of Illinois Central Gulf’s locomotive fleet, especially in local freight, yard switching, and branchline service. Many of these dependable 1,750-horsepower units were inherited from predecessor railroads and continued working well into the ICG era thanks to their rugged reliability and versatility. Several units received rebuilt features such as chopped noses for improved visibility, allowing the locomotives to remain effective for industrial switching and secondary freight assignments across the railroad’s extensive system.
