Product Overview

Some journeys to space begin with a much more grounded form of transportation. The WalthersMainline HO Scale Rocket Train Booster Car with Refrigeration Unit recreates one of the specialized heavy-duty flatcars used to transport solid rocket booster components across the country as part of NASA's remarkable rail operation.

First introduced with the Space Shuttle program in 1981, NASA's rocket train carried solid rocket boosters from Morton Thiokol in Utah to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The train used massive four-truck flatcars to transport rocket components beneath protective hoods. Cars carrying temperature-sensitive solid rocket booster propellant were equipped with refrigeration units to help maintain the cargo at a consistent temperature throughout the journey.

Finished in a special Artemis commemorative scheme, this model celebrates NASA's return to lunar exploration through the Space Launch System. The newly tooled refrigeration equipment and flexible piping add another layer of visual interest to an already impressive car, making it a natural centerpiece for a complete rocket train or aerospace-themed display.

The Artemis Program Returns the Rocket Train to Service

After the Space Shuttle era ended, NASA's specialized rocket train returned in 2020 to support a new generation of lunar exploration. The Artemis program once again relies on rail transportation to move solid rocket booster components from Utah to Florida, giving this extraordinary operation a renewed place in both railroad and spaceflight history.

Product Features

Features of the 66' Rocket Booster Flatcar include:

  • Newly tooled protective hood
  • Newly tooled refrigeration unit with flexible piping on specified cars
  • Heavy die-cast metal body for improved tracking and performance

Why We Love This Model

The Artemis scheme gives this specialized car a strong connection to current space exploration, while the refrigeration unit adds mechanical detail that makes the model especially compelling. The flexible piping, protective hood, massive four-truck frame, and commemorative appearance combine to create a distinctive model with a story extending far beyond the railroad.
