Illinois Central Gulf & the 73' Greenville Wood Chip Hopper
Illinois Central Gulf was formed in 1972 through the merger of the Illinois Central Railroad and Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, creating a major freight railroad connecting the Midwest to the Gulf Coast. Serving agricultural regions, forest product industries, and major manufacturing centers, the railroad became known for its efficient freight operations and distinctive orange-and-white “split rail” paint scheme. Illinois Central Gulf handled a wide variety of traffic throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including grain, chemicals, paper products, and forest industry shipments across its extensive north-south network.
The 73' Greenville Wood Chip Hopper became an important freight car for moving lightweight wood chips used in paper mills and other forest product industries served by Illinois Central Gulf. These large-capacity cars were designed specifically to haul bulk wood chips efficiently while maximizing cubic capacity without exceeding weight limits. Illinois Central Gulf frequently handled wood chip traffic moving between lumber operations, pulp mills, and paper plants throughout the South and Midwest, making the distinctive Greenville wood chip hoppers a familiar sight in dedicated forest products service across the railroad’s system.
