Coal Service

Add a staple of the coal industry to your HO Scale railroad with WalthersMainline 50' Bethgon Coalporter Gondolas. Prototypes for this freight car remains a common sight, running in unit trains across the North American rail network. Built by Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown American Corporation, the Bethgon features all-aluminum construction and a unique trough-style bottom for added carrying capacity. Because there are no discharge chutes on the bottom of the car, these cars are unloaded strictly by rotary dump.

BNSF

BNSF Railway traces its roots to several historic western railroads, including the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and Burlington Northern. Formed in 1995 through the merger of Burlington Northern and the Santa Fe Railway, BNSF became one of the largest freight railroads in North America, operating across the western and central United States. Known for its distinctive orange locomotives, BNSF handles a wide variety of traffic including intermodal, grain, automotive, and industrial freight.

Coal has long been one of BNSF’s most important commodities, particularly from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and Montana. Massive unit coal trains hauled by BNSF locomotives deliver low-sulfur coal to power plants across the United States, making coal service a defining part of the railroad’s modern operations. Long strings of aluminum coal hoppers and distributed power locomotives have become an iconic sight on BNSF mainlines throughout the West.
