Coal Service

Add a staple of the coal industry to your HO Scale railroad with WalthersMainline 50' Bethgon Coalporter Gondolas. Prototypes for this freight car remains a common sight, running in unit trains across the North American rail network. Built by Bethlehem Steel's Johnstown American Corporation, the Bethgon features all-aluminum construction and a unique trough-style bottom for added carrying capacity. Because there are no discharge chutes on the bottom of the car, these cars are unloaded strictly by rotary dump.

CSX

CSX Transportation traces its roots to many historic Eastern railroads, including the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, Seaboard Air Line, and Louisville & Nashville. Formed in the 1980s through a series of mergers, CSX became one of the largest freight railroads in the United States, operating across the Eastern Seaboard and Midwest. Known for its dark blue and yellow locomotives, CSX handles a wide variety of freight including intermodal, automotive, agricultural, and industrial traffic.

Coal has long been one of CSX’s most important commodities, especially from the Appalachian coal fields of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia. Massive unit coal trains hauled by powerful CSX locomotives have supplied power plants, steel mills, and export terminals for decades, making coal service a defining part of the railroad’s history and operations.
