Wood Chip Service

Add realistic forest products traffic to your HO Scale railroad with the WalthersMainline 36' Wood Chip Hopper. Designed for hauling lightweight bulk commodities such as wood chips and other forestry byproducts, these distinctive cars became a common sight serving paper mills, lumber operations, and wood processing facilities across North America. Their high-sided design allowed railroads to maximize cubic capacity while keeping axle loads within limits, making them ideal for moving large volumes of low-density material efficiently. Compact yet specialized, these hoppers bring unique operational variety to any freight roster.

B&O and the 36' Wood Chip Hopper

Founded in 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) was America’s first common carrier railroad and one of the most influential railroads in North American history. Created to connect the port of Baltimore with western markets, the B&O helped shape the growth of rail transportation across the eastern United States. Over the decades, the railroad expanded through Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and beyond, becoming known for its innovative engineering, classic blue-and-gray paint schemes, and famous passenger trains such as the Capitol Limited and Royal Blue.

By the mid-20th century, the B&O had evolved into a major freight-hauling railroad, handling coal, manufactured goods, agricultural products, and forest products throughout its system. In 1963, the railroad became part of the Chessie System, later joining CSX Transportation in the 1980s.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the forest products industry experienced significant growth as paper mills and wood processing facilities increased production. Railroads like the B&O used specialized wood chip hoppers to transport lightweight wood chips from lumber mills and logging operations to paper plants and industrial customers across the eastern United States.

The 36' Wood Chip Hopper was designed specifically for this service. Its tall sides provided extra cubic capacity for low-density loads while maintaining acceptable weight limits for rail transport. These cars commonly operated in dedicated forest product service, moving wood chips, sawmill waste, and similar bulk materials throughout regions served by the B&O.

On the B&O, wood chip cars could often be found traveling through heavily forested territories in Appalachia and the eastern Midwest, serving paper mills, lumber companies, and related industries. Their unique appearance and specialized purpose made them a distinctive addition to freight consists during the transition-era and early modern-era operations of the railroad.
