Celotex and the 36' Wood Chip Hopper

The Celotex Corporation was a major American manufacturer of building materials and insulation products, with roots dating back to the 1920s. The company operated numerous manufacturing plants across the United States and relied heavily on rail transportation to move raw materials and finished products. Celotex became especially well known for producing fiberboard, insulation, and other construction materials used throughout North America.

Celotex used specialized 36' wood chip hoppers in dedicated service hauling wood chips and other lightweight forestry byproducts to its manufacturing facilities. Operating under the NFCX reporting marks, these cars were designed with high sides to maximize cubic capacity while remaining light enough for efficient rail transportation.

Common during the 1960s through the 1980s, NFCX wood chip cars were a familiar sight moving between lumber mills, paper plants, and Celotex production facilities across the eastern and southern United States. Their unique appearance made them standout additions to freight trains handling forest products traffic.
