Southern and the 36' Wood Chip Hopper

Southern Railway operated an extensive rail network throughout the southeastern United States, serving many of the region’s major lumber, paper, and forestry industries. With large concentrations of timber production across states such as Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and Tennessee, Southern handled significant volumes of forest products traffic during the mid-20th century.

To support this business, Southern Railway utilized specialized 36' wood chip hoppers designed for hauling lightweight wood chips and sawmill byproducts. Their tall-sided bodies provided increased cubic capacity while maintaining efficient operating weights. These cars commonly moved between logging operations, sawmills, and paper mills throughout the Southeast during the 1960s through the 1980s, making them a familiar sight in Southern Railway freight service.
