Product Description

Wood Chip Service

Add realistic forest products traffic to your HO Scale railroad with the WalthersMainline 36' Wood Chip Hopper. Designed for hauling lightweight bulk commodities such as wood chips and other forestry byproducts, these distinctive cars became a common sight serving paper mills, lumber operations, and wood processing facilities across North America. Their high-sided design allowed railroads to maximize cubic capacity while keeping axle loads within limits, making them ideal for moving large volumes of low-density material efficiently. Compact yet specialized, these hoppers bring unique operational variety to any freight roster.

Western Maryland and the 36' Wood Chip Hopper

The Western Maryland Railway operated throughout Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and surrounding regions, earning a reputation for hauling coal, industrial products, and forest-related traffic through the Appalachian region. With access to heavily wooded territories and connections to paper and lumber industries, the railroad handled a variety of forestry products during the mid-20th century.

To serve these industries, Western Maryland utilized specialized 36' wood chip hoppers for transporting lightweight wood chips and mill waste to paper mills and processing facilities. Their tall-sided design maximized cubic capacity while remaining efficient for rail service. These distinctive cars were commonly seen in forest products service during the 1960s through the 1980s across the railroad’s Appalachian routes.
