Product Description

This WalthersMainline EMD SD50 is perfect for heavy freight service on your HO Scale railroad. As demand for higher-horsepower units and better fuel economy continued to grow in the late 1970s, EMD began testing a new six-axle model in 1979, which entered production as the SD50 in 1981. Like the prototype, this locomotive is a great addition to your railroad's fleet of heavy diesel road units.

Conrail and the EMD SD50

Conrail was formed in 1976 through the consolidation of several bankrupt northeastern railroads, including Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Reading, and Lehigh Valley. Created to restore stability to freight rail service in the Northeast and Midwest, Conrail modernized operations, rebuilt infrastructure, and improved profitability during the late 1970s and 1980s. The railroad became known for its distinctive blue locomotives and large system stretching across the eastern United States before being divided between Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation in 1999.

Conrail operated EMD SD50 locomotives as part of its push toward more powerful and efficient road freight power during the 1980s. Delivering 3,500 horsepower and advanced electronics for the era, the SD50 was designed to handle heavy mainline freight service across Conrail’s extensive network. These locomotives became regular sights on intermodal, coal, and general merchandise trains, working hard over busy eastern corridors and mountain grades. Their modern appearance and performance made them an important part of Conrail’s locomotive fleet during the railroad’s later years.
