Product Description

This WalthersMainline EMD SD50 is perfect for heavy freight service on your HO Scale railroad. As demand for higher-horsepower units and better fuel economy continued to grow in the late 1970s, EMD began testing a new six-axle model in 1979, which entered production as the SD50 in 1981. Like the prototype, this locomotive is a great addition to your railroad's fleet of heavy diesel road units.

Missouri Pacific and the EMD SD50

Missouri Pacific Railroad, commonly known as the “MoPac,” traced its roots back to the 1850s and grew into one of the major railroads serving the central and southwestern United States. Operating across states including Missouri, Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, the railroad handled a wide variety of freight ranging from agricultural products to industrial goods and coal. Known for its striking blue locomotive paint schemes and strong presence across the Midwest and South, Missouri Pacific became part of Union Pacific Railroad in 1982 following a major merger that expanded UP’s national network.

Missouri Pacific utilized EMD SD50 locomotives as part of its modernization efforts during the 1980s, adding powerful six-axle road locomotives capable of handling demanding freight service. Producing 3,500 horsepower, the SD50 offered improved performance for long mainline freight trains operating across the railroad’s extensive system. These locomotives regularly hauled mixed freight, coal, and manifest trains while showcasing the bold Missouri Pacific blue paint scheme that became a favorite among railfans. Their combination of horsepower, traction, and modern styling made the SD50 an important addition to the railroad’s diesel fleet during its final independent years.
