Product Description

This WalthersMainline EMD SD50 is perfect for heavy freight service on your HO Scale railroad. As demand for higher-horsepower units and better fuel economy continued to grow in the late 1970s, EMD began testing a new six-axle model in 1979, which entered production as the SD50 in 1981. Like the prototype, this locomotive is a great addition to your railroad's fleet of heavy diesel road units.

Reading Northern and the EMD SD50

Reading & Northern Railroad, officially known as the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern, was formed in the 1980s to preserve and operate former Reading Company and Central Railroad of New Jersey lines in eastern Pennsylvania. The railroad grew steadily by expanding freight operations and developing a successful passenger excursion business featuring historic steam and diesel equipment. Serving industries such as anthracite coal, aggregates, lumber, and manufacturing, Reading & Northern has become one of the most respected regional railroads in the United States while maintaining a strong connection to Pennsylvania railroading heritage.

Reading & Northern has utilized EMD SD50 locomotives as part of its fleet of high-horsepower road power for heavy freight operations. Originally built in the 1980s with 3,500 horsepower, the SD50 provides the railroad with strong pulling power for coal trains, general freight, and mainline operations across Pennsylvania’s steep grades and rugged terrain. Their classic six-axle design and distinctive appearance make them popular among railfans, while their dependable performance continues to support the railroad’s growing freight network.
