Product Description

This WalthersMainline EMD SD50 is perfect for heavy freight service on your HO Scale railroad. As demand for higher-horsepower units and better fuel economy continued to grow in the late 1970s, EMD began testing a new six-axle model in 1979, which entered production as the SD50 in 1981. Like the prototype, this locomotive is a great addition to your railroad's fleet of heavy diesel road units.

Utah Railway and the EMD SD50

The Utah Railway was founded in 1912 to serve the coal mines of central Utah and quickly became one of the most important regional railroads in the western United States. Originally built to move coal from Carbon County to connections with larger western rail systems, the railroad earned a reputation for operating powerful locomotives over steep mountain grades and rugged desert terrain. Over the decades, Utah Railway expanded its freight operations beyond coal to include aggregates, minerals, and industrial products while maintaining its identity as a hardworking heavy-haul railroad known for dependable service in challenging operating conditions.

Utah Railway utilized the EMD SD50 locomotive as part of its fleet of heavy-duty diesel power designed for demanding freight service. Introduced in the 1980s, the 3,500-horsepower SD50 offered increased hauling capability and improved performance for long coal trains operating through Utah’s steep mountain grades and harsh weather conditions. The locomotive’s six-axle design and strong traction characteristics made it well suited for the railroad’s heavy-haul operations, where dependable power and pulling strength were essential for moving tonnage efficiently across the western rail network.
