Product Description

Bring big power to your HO railroad with the WalthersMainline SD70M! Introduced in 1992 and built through 2004, this later "modified" (as noted by the "M" in the model designation) version of the EMD SD70, was equipped with a wide nose and North American Safety Cab.

Illinois Central and the SD70

Illinois Central, often called the “Main Line of Mid-America,” was one of the most historic railroads in the United States, operating a north-south network that connected Chicago with the Gulf Coast. Founded in 1851, the railroad became famous for hauling agricultural products, manufactured goods, and freight traffic throughout the Midwest and South. Illinois Central also played a major role in coal transportation, moving Illinois Basin coal to power plants, industrial customers, and connecting railroads across its system. The railroad’s black locomotives featuring the distinctive white “split rail” logo became iconic among railfans and modelers during the 1980s and 1990s.

The EMD SD70 series became an important part of Illinois Central’s modern locomotive fleet as the railroad upgraded to newer high-horsepower power for mainline freight service. SD70 locomotives were commonly assigned to heavy manifest freights, grain trains, intermodal service, and coal operations across the railroad’s north-south mainline. Their modern electronics, AC traction performance, and reliable pulling power made them well suited for the demanding freight operations that defined Illinois Central during its later years before becoming part of Canadian National in 1999.

PLEASE NOTE: When operating Walthers-branded DCC-equipped locomotives in DC mode, do not use power packs that exceed an 18V rating. This includes MRC 1300-series power packs which have known issues with our decoders.
