Norfolk Southern and the SD70
Norfolk Southern was formed in 1982 through the merger of the Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway, creating one of the largest freight railroads in the eastern United States. Known for its black locomotives featuring the iconic white horse logo, Norfolk Southern operates an extensive rail network serving major ports, industrial centers, and manufacturing regions across the country. The railroad handles a diverse mix of freight including intermodal traffic, automobiles, agricultural products, chemicals, and general merchandise.
Coal has long been one of Norfolk Southern’s most important commodities. The railroad is famous for hauling massive coal trains from the Appalachian coal fields of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania to power plants, steel mills, and export terminals. Heavy coal drags winding through mountain territory became one of the defining images of Norfolk Southern operations and remain extremely popular among railfans and model railroaders.
The EMD SD70 series became an important part of Norfolk Southern’s modern locomotive fleet during the 1990s and 2000s. Designed for heavy mainline freight service, SD70 locomotives provided the horsepower and reliability needed for demanding intermodal, manifest, and coal train operations. Norfolk Southern operated several versions of the SD70, including SD70M and SD70ACe locomotives, which became common sights leading long freight trains across the railroad’s vast system. Their combination of modern performance and heavy-haul capability made them especially valuable in coal service throughout the eastern United States.
